ENGINE ROOM & EQUIPMENT

The engine room on ON958 is the largest area in the boat at 11' long. It is completely watertight, this is achieved by having a watertight door, a Double bottom (should the main Hull be holed) and the Air vents all have flaps that close should the boat capsize.

During its restoration life, the Tool locker had been re-located to allow for a second watertight door/hatch to be fitted, this enables access to the Foreword Cabin wi thought having to go out on deck.

After a thorough clean and degrease, a start was made on the wiring in the engine room, a lot had been disconnected at some time, either in its conversion era or in later years. All this has been tidied up and repaired.

Because a Lifeboat is designed for saving lives and no one lives aboard, once the Battery Isolators are switched on, everything is Powered up, including the engine ignition etc. I did not want this because of damage to alternators etc. So I have installed an auxiliary 24v system with feeds from both battery banks to the Forward & Aft cabin with new switch and trip panels in each. I also took the opportunity to put in a 24v battery charger so that the batteries can be trickle charged while moored up.

I re located the tool locker to within the engine room, and got the engines running, first time for a few years, a little hard to start at first Port engine took a couple of hours, but the Stb'd engine took a couple of days because the Injector pump had a seized element, but now all is well.

My next major job is to remove the engine room floor panels, and check the Hull for soundness, make any repairs and then remove the cooling heat exchangers for full over-haul, these jobs are for rainy day's!
