Aft Cabin

This is the major project area! After the 1970's conversion it was made 100% watertight, by adding a watertight door between the Wheelhouse and Cabin and covering over the rear shelter and fitting another watertight hatch. Thus the self righting function was enabled.

All the original lockers have been stripped out, and it was prior to our ownership being converted for living in with beds and kitchen arrangement.

I decided that I wanted to replace the Lockers in a style that is appropriate for the boat. and re-create the Navigators/Radio room corner. I cannot find the exact equipment that was fitted in the 1960's but have found similar equipment of the period.

I am making a discrete galley area in what was the rope locker space for the "Drogue" and hiding away Hot water and water supply tanks within the Hold and between decks area's.

In the cabin floor there are 6 access hatches to the hull/hold area. These had never been up since 1988 when the boat was retired, so after spending some time getting them opened up, was the long job of removing the Air cases(flotation tanks) these are made of timber (red cedar) and then covered with canvas and painted to make them watertight. These filled the hold, so that the boat became "unsinkable".

Within this section of the hold are the Propshafts, the steering shaft, "freeing trunks" (these are wooden trunks that go from the Wheelhouse deck straight down through the bottom of the boat to drain the water from the wheelhouse floor), Prop scuttles (tubes leading down to the propellers that can be opened, and weeds, rope etc. removed from the propellers)
